Additionally, I’ll have individual bunches of kale, collards, arugula, swiss chard, mizuna, radishes, turnips, lettuce, green onions, andbroccoli available at Renfrow Hardware Wednesday through Saturday this week. They’ll be set up inside the store as a mini-farm stand until we open the real farm stand starting on Tuesday, June 7th.
Broccoli comes second only to tomatoes in my favorite food crops to grow(EAT). It is most easily and reliably grown in the autumn in our climate, as broccoli loves cool temperatures and the springtime can mess that up with random eighty-degree weeks…like the one we have just begun…eek! Enjoy it while it lasts!
The trick to great broccoli in your own garden is to plant it early enough for each season. I aim for these planting timeframes:
- FALL: late July through mid-August
- SPRING: February through early March
We are going to be part of the annual Gardeners’ Garden Tour this Mother’s Day weekend, May 7 & 8, hosted by the wonderful Myers Park treasure, Wing Haven Gardens. Enjoy four other beautiful private gardens as well as Wing Haven’s grounds during this 2-day garden-lovers’ excursion.
Garden Tour tickets are available at Renfrow Hardware during the next two weeks leading up to the tour. $30 per person, cash only. $35 on day of event. Other places to pre-purchase tickets – Black Hawk Hardware, Wing Haven Gardens, and online (with will call pick-up at Wing Haven during the tour).
So many flowers are blooming right now, and I’m head over heels for these bright, vivid colors! Bouquets will be available at Renfrow Hardware all week long.
In the Greenhouse
Many thanks to the renowned botanist Larry Mellichamp and UNCC Botanical Gardens for growing so many unique native perennials for us and our gardening customers! He delivered them last week and there are so many really cool specimens. Check out the list of perennials (mixture of shade-loving and sun-loving) on our most recent Renfrow greenhouse availability list. Many of these items can’t be found anywhere else around here commercially, Larry tells me. This was our once-yearly delivery, so shop soon for best availability.
