2015 Week 42

It’s Pumpkin Time!
We grew so many pumpkins & winter squash this year – all heirloom varieties that are delicious as well as gorgeous. Stop by the farm stand or Renfrow Hardware to see the entire selection of shapes, colors, & sizes. We also have dried corn stalks, which paired with cookable pumpkins is adorable autumn home decor.

On Sunday night my dad and I spread frost cloth over the final two tomato rows in attempts to save them from last night’s frost warning – and it worked. We will continue to have tomatoes for another few weeks, until a harder frost finally takes us out. We do however have lots of green tomatoes available this week from the rows that we pulled up late last week and did not try to salvage.
Moe’s Original BBQ is serving up our Fried Green Tomatoes (along with our collards) on their menu this week.

Here also is my new favorite way to eat green tomatoes – a unique alternative to apple pie. My friend made this for me a few weeks ago, and it is one of the very best pies I have ever tasted!

Green Tomato Pie

Pie shell & top, either homemade or premade
4-5 large green tomatoes, sliced thinly
3/4 c sugar
1/4 c butter (1/2 stick), cut into chunks
2 tsp flour
1 Tbsp vinegar
cinnamon, to taste

Preheat oven to 425F. Toss ingredients together and layer in pie shell, covering with the top crust. Poke holes in the top and bake for 30 minutes with aluminum foil holding down the edges. Remove foil and continue baking for 15-20 more minutes, or until golden brown. Enjoy!
