2016, Week 16

Hello farm friends!

The fields are churning out ample harvests right now and we are so pleased with the quality and taste of the produce! We really need some rain, and thus are still waiting on a few more crops to be ready, including turnips, broccoli, lettuce, and green onions.

I’ll have kalecollardsarugula, swiss chard, mustard greens, mizuna, and radishes available at Renfrow Hardware Wednesday through Saturday this week. They’ll be set up inside the store as a mini-farm stand until we open the real farm stand starting on Tuesday, June 7th. Flower bouquets will also be available on Wednesday and Saturday.

Produce boxes will start up once a few more items are ready!

Speaking of rain, we really haven’t seen too much of it around here in the past few months, which is so crazy following our sopping wet winter. March was one of the driest on record and April is looking to be pretty similar.

BUT….WE HAVE GREAT NEWS – we recently received a grant from the USDA’s National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) that will cover most of the cost of a well for the farm!! This is HUGE, as irrigation will certainly take the stress out of droughts, help us to establish young seedlings more quickly, and expand yields on many crops that have suffered without ample water in the past. There is no true substitute for natural rainfall but this well will be an immense blessing to us in so many ways.

We hope to have the well drilled and irrigation lines installed in the next couple of months!!

I received a sweet note last week with these gorgeous photos from a bride who arranged our farm’s flowers for her DIY wedding flowers last summer! We will have so many varieties of flowers at the farm this summer and would love for you to think of us and our bulk buckets of blooms when planning decorations for your bridal & baby showers, backyard cookouts, birthday celebrations, etc. We will have quite a plethora of blooms from June-October!
David and I had a blast at our backyard chickens class last week. We had an enthusiastic group of nearly 20 aspiring backyard chicken ranchers who loved holding one of the Renfrow backyard hens and viewing a special delivery of chicks. We have four more weeks of chick arrivals currently on the calendar, and will update it with any last-minute additions.

On the same night as our chicken class, Mary Beth and Ruth represented the farm at the Salvation Army of Charlotte‘s annual Festival of Tables Fundraiser. They had so much fun using several buckets of our farm’s flowers, some of our vintage event decor (which we have available for rent for your own parties!), and even won an “honorable mention” ribbon for their beautiful table setting for this fundraiser!
